What's the Employee Retention Tax Credit program?
The Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) is a program under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act from the U.S. Department of The Treasury. This program helps businesses offset their payroll tax liabilities for employees.
Does the program have any misconceptions?
When these programs were first introduced by the government you could use the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) or the ERTC, but not both. Most businesses used the PPP because of how easy they were to apply for and the added perk of not having to pay them back.
What was the outcome of this?
Businesses neglected to apply for the ERTC. As a result, the government changed the rules for businesses. Now even if a business used PPP, it could apply for ERTC.
What are the conditions for using ERTC?
Initially, you had to have seen a reduction in sales revenue, but this has changed. Your business must have been impacted by COVID. However, there are ways other than revenue that a business can qualify for.
Do you have any advice?
It’s important to get educated on this program due to the amount of misinformation. This is a tax specialty program, so you want to work with an accounting firm or someone who is qualified and insured in case you get audited.
Is there a maximum number of employees to qualify?
This is designed for businesses with 500 employees or less.
